10 years ago Richard retired from a long and distinguished career with the Memphis Police Department. He says he really enjoyed those years, and now he really enjoys paddling. He was one of the original Wolf River Conservancy River Guides, and has been volunteering ever since. And apparently it is a family thing for his brother and sister-in-law volunteer too. Richard is president of the Bluff City Canoe Club, and he’s handy around the shop: constantly modifying his boats, and recently designing and sewing a skirt cover for the open top of his canoe (Skirts help keep water out and also prevent the boat from being shoved around by wind).
Richard is not one to toot his own horn, and it wasn’t until the second month on the river until I learned of his sporting prowess back in the day: He was a fullback at Catholic High (nicknamed: The Bull, due to his penchant for running straight ahead, over anyone unlucky enough to get in his way) and he earned a track scholarship to Memphis State University (high hurdles and relay team).
